Forage isn’t just a treat — for many small pets it’s a natural, enriching part of a healthy diet. Here’s what’s safe to feed rabbits, gerbils and other small rodents, and how to introduce it.
Why forage matters
In the wild, small animals graze on a wide variety of grasses, leaves, herbs and roots. Offering dried forage at home mimics that natural diet, supports digestion and keeps busy animals mentally stimulated.
Safe, popular forage
- Dandelion — leaves and root, a firm favourite and gently good for digestion.
- Plantain & nettle — fibrous leaves rabbits and guinea pigs love.
- Marigold & rose petals — pretty, aromatic and great for enrichment.
- Dried carrot & parsnip — sweet, crunchy treats in small amounts.
How to introduce new forage
Add one new item at a time, in a small amount, and watch droppings and appetite for a day or two before offering more. Always keep unlimited hay and fresh water available.
What to avoid
Skip anything you can’t positively identify, and avoid mouldy, damp or treated plants. When in doubt, leave it out — or ask your vet.
