Ask any exotic vet what the single most important food for a rabbit or guinea pig is, and the answer is almost always the same: hay. Here’s why fibre is so important for small pets.
Fibre keeps the gut moving
Rabbits and guinea pigs have delicate digestive systems that rely on a constant supply of fibre to keep everything moving. A diet low in hay can quickly lead to serious tummy trouble. That’s why grass hay should make up around 80% of their diet.
Hay and dental health
Small pets’ teeth grow continuously. The natural chewing action of eating hay and gnawing on wood wears teeth down evenly, helping prevent painful dental problems that are common in under-chewed diets.
Choosing a good hay
Look for hay that smells sweet and fresh, is green rather than yellow, and is low in dust. Our Meadow Hay & Timothy Blend is hand-sorted to reduce dust and coarse stems.
Make hay interesting
Tuck hay into tubes, stuff it in baskets, or sprinkle a little forage on top to tempt grazers. The more they eat, the healthier their gut and teeth.
